Dr. Shamel Addas

Thank you for visiting my personal website. My name is Shamel Addas. I am an Associate Professor and Distinguished Faculty Fellow of Management Information Systems (MIS) at the Smith School of Business, Queen’s University. Prior to that, I was Assistant Professor of MIS at Ieseg School of Management in France.

I hold a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the American University in Cairo, an MBA from the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, and a Ph.D. in Management (IS specialization) from McGill University.

My research examines the impact of information technology use on individuals and groups in work-related and health care settings. I am involved in three research streams. First, I am especially interested in the problematic and controversial aspects of IT use such as how it interrupts work and affects work performance. Second, my research investigates how individuals interact with virtual assistants (chatbots) and identifies the behavioural and performance outcomes associated with these interactions. Finally, I examine how the use of different healthcare information technologies affect patients’ quality of care and behavioural and clinical outcomes. My research has been published or is forthcoming in leading journals such as MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Sloan Management Review, and others. I have also presented my work at various academic conferences, including the Academy of Management, ICIS, AMCIS, HICSS, and ASAC.

At Queen’s, I teach courses in the Commerce program (undergraduate) and in our graduate programs (MSc/PhD and MBA). I have also been invited to teach courses in the Netherlands (MSc. in Business Administration), France (MSc. in Business Analysis and Consulting) and Egypt (EMBA program). I use a blended teaching approach including lectures, interactive sessions, business case studies, business games, and e-learning. I am also involved in supervising graduate students at various academic institutions.

In addition, I provide academic services to the university (e.g., serving on the Renewal, Tenure, and Promotion Committee and the Commerce Curriculum Committee), and to the IS community (e.g., ad-hoc reviewer for various journals/ conferences, AE for journals and conferences, Mini-Track Co-Chair, Session Chair, and Track Discussant).

In the past, I held various posts in the industry including Director of Production, Operations Analyst, and Microsoft Service Professional.
